Crisi in Crimea: The Presidents of Lithuania and Poland call on holding NATO article four consultations

Sunday, March 2, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaite spoke on the phone with President Bronislaw Komorowski to discuss the situation in Crimea and the growing tension in the peninsula.

The Presidents of Lithuania and Poland expressed concern over the combat alert of Russian military units at NATO’s borders.

The Presidents agreed that Russia’s actions near the borders of the Alliance posed a threat to the security of the entire region. Therefore, they called to hold immediate NATO consultations under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

President Dalia Grybauskaite underlined that Ukraine’s territorial integrity was an essential condition for international security. She pointed out that all the parties had to respect international agreements and seek a solution to the current situation only through peaceful dialogue.

Today NATO’s Secretary General is convening a meeting of ambassadors from 28 member states. European Union foreign ministers will hold an extraordinary a meeting in Brussels tomorrow.
